LAMS Bikes in Queensland — Complete Guide

What is LAMS?

Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) restricts the bikes learner and provisional riders can ride in Queensland. LAMS bikes must have a power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne or less and an engine capacity that doesn't exceed 660cc.

QLD Licence Progression

RE Licence (Learner)

Complete Q-Ride or Q-SAFE. Must ride LAMS bikes. Minimum 1 year before upgrade. No pillion passengers. No alcohol.

RE Provisional (P1/P2)

Still restricted to LAMS bikes. Can carry a pillion after P1 (1 year). Total LAMS restriction period depends on age and when you got your licence.

R Licence (Open)

No restrictions on motorcycle type. Must hold RE for minimum period (1-3 years depending on age). Apply for R class at TMR.

QLD-Specific Rule

In Queensland, the LAMS restriction period depends on your age. If you're under 25, you must hold an RE licence for 3 years before upgrading to R class. If you're 25 or over, the minimum period is 1 year. Always check the latest rules at the TMR website.
